FOUR students from SMK Sri
Muda Penaga Penang were first prize winners in a multimedia video competition
entitled Water Vision.
The contest was aimed at highlighting environmental and water
conservation. It was open to more than 300 schools.
The four Fourth Formers were named champions in the nationwide competition, sponsored by Cola-Cola and co-organised by Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), which challenged students to apply multimedia presentation skills to address local environmental problems.
Mohamad Faqhree, Nuraini Idros, Nurfarhana Kassim and Ahmad Zaem Akmar studied the ecosystem of a padi field which had been affected by illegal chemical fertilisers used by padi farmers over the years.
Coached by their teacher Aida Yahaya, the students revealed that many species of aquatic life normally found in padi fields were wiped out due to high chemical content in the water.

The winning video presentation also featured exclusive
interviews with the local folk and farmers including officers from Malaysian
Agricultural and Research Institute who outlined measures to conserve and
restore the affected ecosystem.
"This competition has instilled increased awareness of environmental issues in the students. They have genuinely started to care about the environment," said Aida.
Coca-Cola’s director of public affairs and communications Mohamed Kadri Mohamed Taib said that the ultimate aim of the contest was to create environmental awareness and provide participatory learning methods so that youth would make responsible decisions to protect the environment.
The winning team received cash prizes and took part in a three-day/two-night MNS Nature Education Camp to learn about stream ecology, night life and the fragile balance of the ecosystem.
