INDUSTRIAL WASTE TREATMENT: Natural gas, fish ponds the answer?

I REFER to the news report "Treatment plants close more often" (NST, June 14).

The culprits behind the closure — for remedial works — of water treatment plants have been identified as ammonia from industrial sources and diesel spilled by heavy vehicles.

Diesel spillage by heavy vehicles could be solved if all such vehicles are required by law to switch to natural gas (large quantities of which are produced in Malaysia).

This will also solve the problem of such diesel vehicles spewing out acrid black smoke that contributes to air pollution.

As for the discharge of ammonia, factories should be required to set up waste-treatment facilities at their premises, based on waste-treatment technology to the standards and specifications of the Department of Environment (DOE) so as to adequately treat their waste.
The biggest problem that will be encountered will be how to adequately monitor these industries to ensure that they do not discharge untreated or inadequately treated waste water into public waterways at any time (night, public holidays or during heavy rain).

From the state of pollution of our rivers, it is obvious that the number of DOE officers available to effectively monitor the many industries near our rivers is inadequate.

Alternatively, all industries and factories near rivers could be required to channel their final treated discharge through fish ponds (as is being done in Japan).

Any untreated or inadequately treated waste water passing through the pond would adversely affect the health of the fish, causing mortality.

The fish, in effect, will be "on sentry duty" 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and will show evidence of pollution, regardless of what time of day or night the untreated water was discharged.

The DOE officers can routinely check the fish in the pond for sickness or death.

They can then send such fish to the laboratory for confirmation of discharge of untreated waste water by industries.
